As a marine biologist, writer and broadcaster Dr. Helen Scales work combines a scuba diver’s devotion to exploring the oceans; a scientist’s nerdy attention to detail; a conservationist’s angst about the state of the planet; and a storyteller’s obsession with words and ideas.
She writes books and articles and makes radio documentaries.
In her latest book, Spirals in Time, a Guardian bestseller and BBC Radio 4’s Book of the week, Helen charts the course of seashells through human history and the ocean depths. She is currently working on her next book, From the Eye of the Shoal about the wonders of fishes, due out in 2018.
“I search for stories about the oceans and the natural world, of the wonders of science and people; and I do my best to spend as much time as I can in, on and next to the sea.”
