Nature Scavenger Hunts to download
Nature Scavenger Hunts are great ways to build childrens’ (or adult) observation skills. Observing nature is becoming a lost art and I am here to reassure you that it doesn’t have to be like this. It also doesn’t have to be a massive pressure to fulfill either. Observing can be simple, things passed everyday on way to school, or simple sensory observations. First point it out to them and soon they will stop to notice it too.
As you may know – the The Smart Happy Project is about looking for shapes and patterns in nature but to do that we need to practice the searching bit. So, these nature scavenger hunts are here to help. You can download them at the bottom.
Keeping nature playful is important. Some of the hunts are to get the imagination going and to inspire the wonder in nature. This is to build a love and a connection with nature , not to lecture and impose restrictions. So keeping it as a fun game is priority.
Natural colours
Some of the hunts are themed around aspects of symmetry of shapes, while others are general nature objects to look for. One of the most popular is always the Natural Colour Wheel Hunt. You create you own colour spectrum using small paint swatches from the DIY shop. Cut them to shape and fix them into the centre of the circle on the print out leaving space at the wide edge of the slices. Go hunting for nature’s colours that match the colour swatches you have picked. It can be such a satisfying game outside. Just use a glue stick to attach leaves and petals. Who would ever have thought there could be so many greens?
What’s interesting about the Colour Wheel hunt is you often look around and see a dark green in the trees that you need for your hunt but up close its difficult to get any of it as it was the colour of the shadow, how can you glue a shadow?? It really encourages an analysis of what you are looking at.
Natural Patterns
The Bilateral Symmetry in Nature Scavenger Hunt is good for those who have experienced reflective shapes in their school studies . And the Nature Scavenger Hunt Clues was my first and remains a mix of shapes and ideas to spark your imagination around nature. Can you collect a smell?
The Magic Tree Scavenger Hunt was a special commission for Green Acorns. And is tree story hunt.
Nature Scavenger hunts can easily be treasure hunts by awarding a prize to a completed hunt sheet.
Once you start to get a taste for finding shapes in natural forms, have a read of How to look for Numbers in Nature and it will get you well on the way to seeing the natural patterns in that give us an insight into their rules of growth.
